What is suspended scaffolding?
These are platforms held up in the air by a non-rigid means such as wire ropes or chains from an overhead structure. The platform is suspended by a cable system that allows scaffolders and materials to move between heights.
It offers savings on very tall structures that need access for a small improvement or building maintenance. It is mostly used for repair works and painting. The working platform is suspended from roofs and can be lowered or lifted to the desired level. A quality scaffold hires in Brighton will help you complete a construction or renovation safely and efficiently.
The types of suspended scaffolding include
Single point adjustable
A platform that is equipped with a tool to allow movement of the platform to a level where the worker wants to work from. The platform is suspended with a rope from an overhead support. The rope between the suspension device and scaffold must be vertical at all times. The maximum intended load is 113 kg.
Two-point adjustable suspension scaffolds
Also known as swing-stage scaffolds, cables and ropes are connected to stirrups across each end of the platform. Youโve probably seen them in use for washing skyscraper windows and high rise construction building.
A secure anchorage is crucial to the safe use of a two-point suspended scaffold. The weight of the occupants and the scaffold must be supported by each of the scaffold components and the structure it is attached to. It is important to access this scaffold system from the rooftop of the building or from the ground you are working on, not a ladder.
Multi-point adjustable scaffolds
Here, a platform(s) is held up by multiple ropes, equipped with a means to lower and raise the platforms to the required work level. They are used in silos, tanks and chimneys. It must be suspended from hooks, brackets, metal outriggers, wire rope slings or a material with equal strength and durability.
Catenary suspended scaffold
It relies on ropes but uses it in a different way than the single or two point adjustable scaffolds. It uses two horizontal ropes to surround a catenary scaffold and they are connected to vertical pickup ropes attached to structural members of a structure or building.
Catenary scaffolds cannot have more than two platforms and the platform supported by wire ropes should have hook-shaped stops to prevent slipping from the wire ropes. Each person on the scaffold must be protected by a fall-arrest system.
Needle Beam suspended scaffolds
This is a simple scaffold that includes a platform suspended from needle beams and attached to an end of a structure. Hangers or ropes will be used for support and one end of the scaffold is supported with a permanent structural member. We arrange the support connection in a way that prevents the needle beam from becoming displaced or rolling.
Float suspended scaffolds
This suspended scaffold includes a braced platform on two parallel bearers extending at least 6 inches beyond the platform on both sides and hanging from overhead supports by ropes. The ropes must pass under the platform, hitched to an end of the bearer, hitched on the other end and have sufficient rope left over for supporting ties.

JL scaffolding has a track record for health & safety management. We are members of the Safety Schemes in Procurement, which is the only way to ascertain a company in Brighton that takes safety seriously.
High-quality standards

We help you save money
Most people in Brighton compare several quotes to find the most competitive quote. We can include ladders, offer a cost-saving bonus for early completion and a small fee for excess hire. We also include scaffolding inspections in each quote. Everything you ask for will be included in the quote we send.
Long-term experience
When buying a product online, you read reviews to see if the product will work. The same applies to the scaffold. You can ask for samples of past work we have completed or ask for recommendations from clients we have worked with in the past.
If your building has any special features that make it difficult to access, we can show samples of similar buildings weโve worked on to ease your mind and prove that we will provide the same quality of work for your project.
We are insured
As a leading scaffolding hire company in Brighton, we are legally required to provide sufficient insurance coverage for public liability and employerโs liability in case of an unforeseen event. This means that if something happens to one of our workers whilst weโre working on your site, you wonโt be held responsible.
There are legal and financial ramifications to using an uninsured scaffolding company. They will be cheaper but the money you end up spending on hospital bills when something goes wrong is 10 times more than the cost of working with an insured scaffolding company in Brighton.

Working at height means a place where a person could fall from a height if precautions are not taken. You work from a height if you work above floor or ground level. You could fall through a fragile surface or an opening.
The work at height regulations of 2005 was instituted to prevent injury and death caused by a fall from height. All UK employers who control work at a height such as JL Scaffolding Brighton are required to follow the regulations.
The best example of scaffolding in biology is when a broken bone is repaired. The body makes a temporary structure called the pro callus. Further growth takes places whilst the body undergoes remodelling.
In education, scaffolding is a variety of instructional methods or strategies used to move students towards a better understanding of a subject or topic until they gain independence in the learning process.
Scaffolding in construction is a temporary platform that supports and elevates workers and materials during cleaning, repair or construction of a machine or site. It includes one or more planks of convenient length and size with different types of support depending on the use and form.
Our scaffolders erect and dismantle a scaffolding system. They install ladders, handrails and walkways at construction sites or shipping areas that use power lifts and tools. They are responsible for cleaning and preparing the site before building the scaffold.
They remove dangerous materials and debris from the site. They unload materials including planks, rails and ladders for the scaffolds. Next, they check their materials and proceed to create the scaffolding.
Our scaffolders are physically fit, have a good manual dexterity to unload and load heavy materials on trucks as a well as operate machinery. They listen, follow instructions and stay organised. They have basic math skills to calculate measurements when building a scaffolding system.
The most common scaffolding hazard is falling from elevation. Workers on a scaffold must have the right fall protection gear such as a guardrail or fall arrest system when suspended 10 feet above the ground.
Unsecured planking is another hazard of scaffolding. It happens when the planks are not well-secured or are uncleated. It causes the worker to slip off and fall. Planks break when they are overloaded or in poor physical condition.
Sometimes, workers on a scaffolding are struck by debris or falling tools from a higher level. This is essentially the most important reason why it is required for workers to use a guardrail as it protects them from falling and prevents any material from falling off a scaffold and hitting people below.
Electrocution is a risk when working close to electrical lines. Workers on a scaffold must maintain a distance of 10 feet for voltage under 50kv and over 10โ4 for voltage for every 1kv over 50 kV.
- Scaffold allows builders and workers on a construction site to work in different places at the same time.
- Transports a specific amount of building materials to different levels of a structure
- Ensures safety of workers working from height
- Provides a foothold for builders working from a high altitude. It provides a level and balanced working platform that facilitates several workers to work on a construction site at once, ensuring that work is faster
- Provides perimeter protection for individuals working from height.
- Makes it easy for workers to reach any part of a building or height without any hindrance
- Makes speedy completion of construction work possible. Workers are more focused on getting the job done because they are balanced and secured on the scaffolding system.
It is the responsibility of JL Scaffolding Brighton and other scaffolding hiring companies to ensure that scaffolding has been inspected before first use, at least every seven days and after a hazard such as heavy rain or high winds that could jeopardise the safety of workers on the scaffold.
Scaffolding inspections must be conducted by a competent person whose experience, training and knowledge are appropriate for the complexity and type of scaffold. A competent person might be an individual who received training to inspect a type of suspended scaffolding system from a manufacturer or someone assessed under the CISRS.
A site manager who attended a scaffolding inspection course could also be deemed competent. The inspector should note issues that could affect the health & safety of workers on the scaffold and corrective actions that should be taken to fix the problem or prevent it from recurring.
Worldwide scaffolding safety regulations require the following
A worker suspended 10 feet above the ground must wear a fall arrest system or guardrails
Scaffold components must support 4 times the maximum intended load
Employees working on a scaffold must receive comprehensive training on the hazards of working on a scaffold and how to control each hazard.
Risk assessment before designing and installing a scaffold must be based on hazards of a specific scaffold
A competent person will check the scaffold before each work shift and after a hazard that could endanger the structural integrity has occurred.
UK residents working on a scaffold must complete the CISRS Operative Training Scheme. They should attend a refreshers course every five years before renewing their card.
UK workers are distinguished by different colour cards representing their levels of experience. It ranges from green to gold.
All scaffolds are designed by a scaffold designer. They are responsible for choosing the right scaffolding and preparing the design for the job. The scaffold they design must be safe to manufacture, assemble and use for a specific purpose. A scaffolding contractor such as JL Scaffolding Brighton hires out scaffolding for use in Brighton.
When erecting a scaffold, JL Scaffolding Brighton considers the use of the scaffold, risks and hazards to those who will erect and dismantle the scaffold. The load-bearing capacity of the surface, wind loads, edge protection, safe entry and exit, supporting structures and other factors.
Generally, there must be a starting point from which to work. For construction, it is 1.8m or 6 inches. When workers are exposed to heights greater or equal to these, they require fall protection.
The no minimum height rule requires that when employees work over dangerous machinery, equipment or hazard, where the risk of falling is high, they must have fall protection or machine guarding in place.
For scaffolding in construction, fall protection is only required when you are 3 metres or 10 feet off the lower level.
For fixed ladders, if the top of the ladder or the climb on a fixed ladder is greater than 7.3 metres, the worker should have a self-retracting lifeline or a ladder safety device. Staircases that rise higher than 9.1 metres should have a stair rail along each unprotected edge or side.
Three main scaffolding components include ledgers, standards and transoms. The standard is a tube or long pipe running through the length of the scaffolding and connecting the mass of the scaffold to the ground.
The base is connected a base plate that distributes the weight of each standard. Running horizontally, in between each standard is a ledger that further supports weight distribution.
Transoms are placed on top of ledgers and take different forms; main and intermediate transoms. The main transoms support the standard by acting as supporting boards for the standard by holding them in place. Intermediate transoms are placed beside the main for additional board support.
Other basic components of a scaffolding include the scaffold tubes, scaffold couplers, adjustable base plates, diagonal braces, toe boards and decks.
There are eight well-known types of suspended scaffolds. The catenary scaffold is a platform supported by two horizontal and vertical ropes. The ship/float scaffold is a braced platform hung from overhead supports and resting on two parallel bearers.
The interior hung scaffold is a platform is suspended from a roof structure or ceiling by fixed-length supports. The multi-level scaffold works with a sequence of platforms at multiple levels and relying on similar stirrups. The multi-point adjustable scaffold is held up by several ropes from overhead supports.
The needle beam scaffold is held up by needle beams. The swing stage or two-point scaffold is a platform suspended by two ropes from overhead supports and the single-point adjustable scaffold is a platform suspended by one from an overhead support.
Scaffolding is the solution to many access issues, providing a legal and safe way for workers to work from a height, it is not completely safe.ย A review of the annual report from The National Access & Scaffolding Confederation shows that there were fatalities from scaffolding accidents in 2014. Sadly, the number of accidents increased 9% with 105 accidents, including 24 falls from heights. These accidents were not fatal because correct safety precaution was in place.
We follow the latest health and safety regulations, consistently train our workers on updated safety measures, provide proper PPE materials and use only quality tools when building a scaffold.
Whilst the regulations for fall protection are sometimes confusing, some people get completely lost when you throw in a subpart about an exception to the rule. Based on the European Standards and the American OSHA requirements, these are the required safety measures.
OSHA requires that when working on a suspended platform, employees on a scaffold that is more than 3 metres above a lower level should be protected by a personal fall arrest system and a guardrail system. The fall arrest system is attached to a vertical lifeline by a lanyard that is suspended from a structural member or higher level of the scaffold.
The EN requires that when working from a suspended platform, it should be equipped with intermediate rails, guardrails and toe boards. There should also be an independently attached secondary wire rope that runs separately through the hoist whilst suspended from the anchor point. The secondary break is activated by increased sudden speed when the main wire rope breaks to prevent the platform from falling.
You are required to be tied-off at all times when using suspended scaffolding. You must be tied-off to a fall protection system or anchor point when using the two-point or single point suspension scaffolding. It should be independent of the scaffold you are working on.
Suspended scaffolds are platforms suspended by non-rigid means such as ropes from an overhead structure.
